Sonoma Cleans Up

In the aftermath of the Kincade Fire, many of us are discovering that the home we left during evacuations is not the same home we found when we returned. Our carpets, bedding, drapes and clothes are all tinged with that acrid smell of smoke. That's why we have put together this special section with local businesses we have found that can help as you clean up, recover and make arrangements so that, if this ever happens again, you are better prepared.

After a fire or a flood you will quickly discover that there is a lot of work that needs to be done to get rid of the damage. We find that there is a lot of hidden damage. Unless you are working with a professional, the hidden dust, soot and ash will stay with you for years. If you are planning on cleaning things yourself, vinegar is your friend. Cleaning your refrigerator for example…most people will surface wipe it with bleach, but do you really want bleach in the same place you store your food? Vinegar has a good antiseptic quality and for the most part doesn't harm the surfaces. Smoke and soot are a different problem all together. They can travel throughout an entire home or business, into vents, cabinets, flooring, drapes, bedding etc. If you don’t want to spend days cleaning your home, which may not be as thorough as it should be, call in a local company with lots of past experience to give you an estimate. In many cases it is covered by your home insurance so it won’t cost you a thing.

McDONALD LEAVITT INSURANCE AGENCYMcDONALD LEAVITT INSURANCE AGENCY

Every time there is a fire or a flood or an earthquake we run into the same issue – people either don’t know what their insurance covers or they are vastly under insured. In most cases it is just a few dollars more to increase the coverage to something that will cover the high rebuilding costs in Sonoma County. By the way, if you have made an emergency bag with food water and the like, make sure to also place a copy of your important papers in a Ziploc plastic bag in there too. We are McDonald Leavitt Insurance.

That nasty smoke that affected our air quality will find its way into your home via your air ducts. Your HVAC filters should be changed every 6-12 months and more often if you have pets. After this fire, we highly recommend changing your filter and then again in 60 days. It is important for your family’s health to have your air ducts cleaned when you return to your home after a fire in the area. This is especially important for households that have asthma and allergy sufferers. Trust a local expert that is affordable to help with your duct cleaning. We offer expert, affordable air duct cleaning services to ensure that your air stays clean. We can also help you get set up with the right generator system to keep your home running smoothly during these PSPS events.

VINCE SIGAL ELECTRICVINCE SIGAL ELECTRIC

If you are like most people, you probably don’t own a generator. You wouldn't believe how many people bought one from a hardware store only to find that they didn't work like they thought they would. Some never even took them out of the box. Unfortunately, the only way to assure that the next power outage (and there will be more) doesn't leave you in the dark, is to get a properly sized generator that turns on the second the power goes out or just go solar. If you are thinking about either, we are Vince Sigal Electric. We have been in the county for years and we can give you a free estimate of what it would take to go either the generator or solar route.
