Sun 3/17 | Tule Berry-Gathering Basket Workshop - Santa Rosa 9:30am-3:30pm - With Master Weaver, Charlie Kennard. Enjoy a delightful day full of hands-on learning in Heron Hall & around the peaceful Laguna Environmental Center grounds. Using tule, (a giant species of sedge native to the Laguna & freshwater marshes all over North America), we will weave an Owens Valley Paiute-style scoop-shaped basket. This basket was used for gathering berries & for storing honey-dew collected from the leaves of common reed. S everal unusual weaving techniques will be practiced during this workshop. Previous experience with twining is recommended. Suitable for Adults & Teenagers. All basket-making materials are included in the registration fee.

Fri 3/29 | Heathen Valley Romulus Linney's haunting southern epic is set in the 1840s where the action of the play centers on the desire of the Episcopal Bishop of North Carolina to bring the word of God to a valley so remote & untamed that brothers marry sisters & the people live lives of brutal violence and grinding poverty. Accompanied by an ex-convict named Starns & a young orphan boy, Billy, the sometimes overbearing bishop sets about bringing "order and decency" to the valley. Returning to civilization to raise funds, he leaves Starns behind as his deacon & before long Starns, has indeed worked wonders. When the bishop returns he is amazed, but also disturbed that perhaps earthly pleasures are replacing the poverty that is more befitting for beholding the glory of God.
