Volunteers needed - Spring Lake, Santa Rosa

Discover the Joys of Sharing Nature with Children Be part of the one of the most fulfilling volunteer experiences in the Bay Area leading children on WildCare Field Trips.

Nonprofit outdoor nature education group needs community volunteers to train as Nature Guides at Spring Lake Park in Santa Rosa. Lead nature discovery walks for school children & learn about local wildlife & outdoor teaching methods.

Come to a FREE Orientation on Saturday, August 5, 2017 from 11am-12:30pm. at our center in San Rafael, 76 Albert Park Lane.

Training Sessions begin Saturday August 12, 2017 & conclude on September 30, 2017.
Training takes place several Saturdays & Weekdays, with visits to sites in Marin County as well as Spring Lake Park in Sonoma County. After training, new Nature Guides will lead small groups on Wednesday mornings 2 times per Month at Spring Lake Park during the school year. There is a minimal fee for training materials. Scholarships are available.

Albert Paley: Thresholds Exhibit - Sonoma

Albert Paley (born 1944) is an American modernist metal sculptor. Initially starting out as a jeweler, Paley has become one of the most distinguished & influential metalsmiths in the world. Within each of his works, 3 foundational elements stay true: the natural environment, the built environment & the human presence.

This exhibition will explore Paley’s process & will feature large-scale sculptures, drawings & maquettes.

The City of Sonoma will witness a summer-long display of several of Paley's larger-scale works. In Sonoma Plaza, Depot Park, at the Sonoma Community Center & adjacent to the museum, will be the largest public art installation ever seen in Sonoma. SVMA will provide docent-led walking tours of both the public art installation & museum exhibition.

Behind Peanuts: Pigpen Exhibit - Santa Rosa

Only featured in just over 100 of the 17,897 Peanuts comic strips that Schulz created.
From his 1954 debut, to his last appearance in 1999, Pigpen evolved in the way that Schulz portrayed his dirtiness. Through a display of original sketches, comic strips & ephemera, discover the creative ways Schulz brought Pigpen, with his cloud of dust in tow, into the world of Peanuts. Cloverdale Sculpture Trail Artists’ Tour

Otocast has created a narrated audio guide for the sculptures in the 2017-2018 exhibit. Best of all, the audio comes from the actual artists!

The sculptures will be displayed on an interactive map, with pictures, descriptions & directions from wherever you are, so you can easily find explore the Trail. Download through Otocast, Google Play or the Apple App Store a free Otocast app, which includes the Cloverdale Sculpture Trail.

Luther Burbank’s Experiment Farm Open House & Plant Sale

Saturday Sept. 23, & Sunday, Sept. 24, 10am–4pm. FREE to attend.

Luther Burbank performed most of the experiments which resulted in the creation of more than 800 new varieties of trees, shrubs & flowers at Gold Ridge Farm in Sebastopol. 3 acres of the original 18 are maintained by the volunteers from the Western Sonoma County Historical Society & are open to the public, free of charge.

Docent Tours. Visitors can learn why Luther Burbank was one of the most famous men of his day, along with Edison & Henry Ford, as they stroll around the paths.

Starts for your garden, in the nursery:
Several varieties of Shasta Daisies, ‘Seascape’ Strawberry, Burbank Grape, ‘Surprise’ yellow Daylily, Japanese Anenome, Chilean Guave, Chinese Quince Tree & many more.

Many mature Boutique succulents in original decorative pots, plus starts of unusual varieties to make your own dish gardens.

Kids love to make their own rope with the antique rope machine that they turn by hand & feed apples into the apple press, then drink the fresh cider.

Burbank’s historic cottage will be open where you can see the photographic exhibit of the history of the farm & buy strawberry rhubarb jam made from the fruits of the Farm, plus boutique aprons, books & gifts.

Rachel Carson (1907-1964) will reappear in the person of Lilith Rogers, an environmental activist and writer. Rogers tells the story of the triumphs and tragedies of the author of Silent Spring, the book that started the environmental movement, using Carson’s own words.
Performance: 2pm on Sunday.

Laguns de Santa Rosa Walk (Cotati)

10am-2pm - Explore the upper reach of the Laguna de Santa Rosa from downtown Cotati to the historic headwaters on a gentle, level, (but not wheelchair accessible) 3-mile loop walk. A number of local experts will share their knowledge & insights of the natural & cultural history of the area.
This leisurely amble will include highlights about the Ross Street vernal pools; Cotati Creek Critters restoration & education work; Rohnert Park's Lydia Commons Community Garden where we'll stop for a picnic lunch & the surprising historic headwaters of the Laguna de Santa Rosa.

“Get Your Gut Moving”
Join the non-profit Climbing Over Cancer & Co-Host Healdsburg Firefighters Association for a family fun run/walk in beautiful Healdsburg.
Start & Finish near the Downtown Healdsburg Plaza. The purpose of the GutBuster is to fight stomach cancer through awareness, research & uniting the caring power of people & food.

The 3K is relatively flat course around town. The 10K goes out from Healdsburg then around Fitch Mountain with some river views. The “Gut” wrenching course is the 12.5K. This option goes up a fire road to nearly the top of Fitch Mountain with views of the city & river to the south of town.

We finish up with a Pancake Breakfast at the Bear Republic Brewing Company served by some of our local heroes.
